
PRE-CANSKATE
This is a 30 minute Learn-To-Skate program designed for children 2 to 3 years old. The basics of forward and backward skating, stopping, turning, jumping and spinning are taught by both Professional Coaches and trained Program Assistants. Skaters completing the Pre-CanSkate Certification will be qualified to register for the CanSkate program.
CANSKATE - Stages 1 to 6
This is a 50 minute Learn-To-Skate program designed for children 4 or older. The basics of forward and backward skating, stopping, turning, jumping and spinning are taught by both Professional Coaches and trained Program Assistants. CanSkate is the feeder program to all other Skate Canada skating programs.
Skaters are grouped by ability and age, are evaluated regularly, and progress through the six stages at their own pace. Successful completion at each stage results in a badge.
Our club has been chosen by Skate Canada to run one of its new CanSkate program pilots. Skate Canada selected our coordinator as one of the top 10 Best of the Best CanSkate Coaches for 2010.
Private lessons are available during the Can/STARSkate session. Private lesson fees are in addition to the ice fee and are negotiated between you and your Professional Coach.
PRE-STARSKATE - Stages 5 to 6
This program provides the skater and the parent an introduction to figure skating. Identified skaters working at the CanSkate Stage 5 level or higher will learn basic edge skills, stroking skills, and freeskating skills (jumping, spinning, footwork, field movements, etc). Figure skates must be worn.
Private lessons are available during the Can/STARSkate session. Private lesson fees are in addition to the ice fee and are negotiated between you and your Professional Coach.
SPECIAL BLADES
Special Blades is a Recreational/ Instructional Learn-to-Skate program designed for children age 5 or older who have special developmental needs.
STARSKATE 1
This program provides an introduction to Test and Competitive figure skating and more advanced use of skate edges. Skaters must have completed CanSkate stage 6 to qualify. Skaters work on Dances, Skills, and Freeskate. A private coach is required.
STARSKATE 2
Skaters must have passed 2 complete Preliminary tests to qualify. Skaters work on Dances, Skills, Freeskate, and Interpretive. This session is the Learn to Train, Train to Train Stage of the LTAD (Long Term Athlete Development) Model. A private coach is required.
STARSKATE 3
Skaters must have passed the complete Senior Bronze Freeskate Test or any two complete Junior Silver Tests and be 15 years of age as of December 31, 2010. This is the Train to Train, Learn to Compete Stage of the LTAD Model. A private coach is required.
COMPETITIVE SKATE
Skaters must have completed the Juvenile Competitive Test or higher to qualify for this session. This is the Learn to Compete, Train to Compete, Learning to Win Stage of the LTAD Model.
CANPOWER SKATE
Pre-requisite: Skater must be able to skate.
This is an 50 minute, 11 week program for hockey and ringette players. Skaters progress through skills that gradually increase in complexity. Additional focus is placed on the acquisition of efficient technique, speed, agility, technical aspects of stride and acceleration and skating with the puck/ring. Skaters perform these skills in a course-like pattern. Full equipment is required including neck guard, stick and CSA approved hockey helmet.
ADULT SYNCHRONIZED SKATE
The club has two teams that skaters age 19 or older can join, Glide and Edge Expressions. Previous skating experience is required. A team consists of 12 to 20 skaters on the ice at one time performing footwork and formations in unison to music. Tryouts are held annually. A professional coach is present at all practices.
